Here We Go Again…

I think it’s going to stick this time. I’ve moved sites and created another blog along with my husband this time. We’re pumped about it and have everything up and running with our first two blog posts up already. As for now, I will leave this blog the same, but eventually, I may be moving or duplicating my patterns and some content over to the new space. I would be beyond thrilled if you would come check it out! If you still follow this space, I’m shocked! But, seriously, I gave this wordpress thing a shot, and learned a lot from it. Now I think I’ve found a blog home from which to share all our eclectic interests including all the facets of our home and travel life.

Welcome to Hearth and Caravan.

New Beginnings

Things have been different around these parts lately.

yellowpink-01

With the passing of my grandfather, the ill health of my grandmother, and the joyous return of spring, I have been finding myself a little more reflective–searching for a way to make reality a little closer to the dreams in my head. I’m not too sure what the days ahead hold for me and my family, but I do know that adventures are waiting for us and that we will not be letting them pass us by. Here’s to a new way of living that includes daydreams, faith filled days, road trips, new business ventures, a true style of my own, and cultivating a life instead of only allowing life to cultivate me. I will try very much to be as genuine as possible with my posting from here on out, and only include things that are real and true and honest. No BS posts just to put something up on time. I will not feel guilt about posting, or not posting, or sharing my heart and who I am. I will make this space my own corner of internet happiness (or sadness, if I should choose). I can only hope some of what makes me happy will make you happy, and encourage you as well.

(I’m not going to lie, these past months have been hard. I mean, the corners-of-my-little-world-folding-in hard. But there is strength and joy and freedom in Christ, and He is the one who has gotten me through. I’m hoping to share that encouragement with you this evening. That even if your world in turning inside out,  there is hope, and his name is Jesus. If you don’t know his love and compassion, seek him. You will find him.)

Summer Break

008

(I have zinnias this year! I love them.)

Okay! Here I am on a Friday again! It’s become a bit of a chore for me to write these weekly posts, especially since it’s the middle of summer and I have places to be, and work to do. (I just got my biggest wholesale crochet order EVER. I’m going to be working like a maniac to get it all finished!) So I’ve decided to take a bit of a break on making myself post every week. I may still pop in with pictures or a few words, but while I’m feeling uninspired on the blog front, I’m going to take a few weeks to enjoy the heat of summer without the looming deadlines.

Expect me back in full force and refreshed in August!

PS Come talk to me on twitter! I’m sure you’ll be able to find me there… #addiction

Ten Years

038

040

(Please pardon the photos! They’re a picture of a picture in a frame. Wow. I’ll do better next time, lol,)

Today is my 10th wedding anniversary! What a ten years it has been, full of ups and downs and joy and sorrow and laughter. I am blessed beyond measure to have Nathan. He is the one person who GETS me. He is also the one who can kick me in the tail if I’m being stupid. Also, he is the only person besides me who has ever had a finger up my nose. Because he thinks that’s funny.

I remember when I was 18 and just falling in love I could not imagine ever being more in love with someone than I was right then. Then I went and married the guy and we have spent the last 10 years weaving our lives together, and I understand. I love and appreciate my husband so much. Here’s to many more anniversaries! I couldn’t ask for a greater blessing than to grow old with this man and for the children we are raising.

Look Up and Be Captivated

9036_678417412185219_471685267_n

A beautiful thing happened just yesterday, when it rained on one side of our yard and not the other. This rainbow was so vivid!

It’s amazing how a rainbow, or a storm, or the garden growing has the magic to pull everyone in our house out of their own little worlds and into the great, big world. It’s so nice to forget, just for a little bit, that there are chores to do, work to do, games to play, meals to cook… and just stare up at something and be captivated and fascinated.

Our days are full of miracles! Let’s let the plants that flower, the children we raise, and the weather in the sky captivate and enthrall us this week.

What makes you feel this way? Did anything captivate or fascinate you this week? Share the wonder in the comments below or continue the conversation on twitter with me.

Pyrex Rainbow

You may or may not know of my LOVE for all the vintage dishes. Seriously. Even the ugly ones. I still love them! There are a few particular types of dishes that I like to focus my collecting on: Tulip Ware, Pyrex, and Fire-King. I absolutely love the beautiful colors and functional beauty of these dishes. It makes me happy to use them in my every day cooking, mixing, baking and storing.

This past weekend, three of my kids and I went to a flea market. We found a few odds and ends, but the best find was these refrigerator Pyrex dishes! I never find the little ones with the lids, but this time I got two of the little ones WITH the lids and a medium one with the lid (it’s a teensy bit chipped on the corner) and I got them all for $5! I was super excited. AND THEN. I realized that the yellow that I found these in completed the spectrum of colors I have collected*. I now have a Pyrex RAINBOW of dishes!! Let’s take a moment to smile at this beauty….

*This in no way means that my collection is complete.😉

Do you have any collections? What do you look for when you go thrifting? Do you have any pretty, pretty Pyrex??

Copyright, Fashion, and Crochet: A Rant of Sorts

When I first started reading and using crochet patterns, I saw a lot of “for personal use only” and “you may not sell items made from using this pattern”. Also, “you may sell items from this pattern if you link to me” or “you may sell items made from this pattern as long as I am sourced as the designer”. I always wondered, first of all, how is the author of this pattern ever going to know if I sell this hat? And secondly, why do they care? Either they have put this pattern out on the internet for free, or I have bought the pattern or pattern book, or borrowed it from the library. The information is *out there* for the taking and hopefully for the using!

Policing the use of patterns must be exhausting! Clearly, I do not want someone to try to steal someones pattern and make money from selling the written pattern. However, the person who wrote that pattern has the choice to keep that pattern to his/herself, to give that pattern away, or to sell it. Whatever a pattern author chooses, I think it would be wise for them to consider the fact that they may not legally do any single thing about someone selling an item or garment made from their pattern. Items that are considered utilitarian (like clothing, or costumes) may not be copyrighted. A written pattern is only under copyright protection in that your exact written words, charts, photos, graphs, etc.. are protected from others claiming them as their own. The idea, the directions, the “recipe” of your work, is UN-copyrightable. That’s a little bit scary as a designer. It’s also a bit freeing.

It’s a question of ethics when people copy another’s pattern into their own words, then sell their own version of that exact pattern. Personally, I would not ever buy a pattern just so I could re-write it and then profit from someone else’s work, but if someone does choose to do that, it is not technically illegal, assuming they use all their own pictures and words. If someone is selling your EXACT pattern, written in YOUR words, pictures, charts… then that is a legal infringement possibly worth reporting/confronting/blasting on twitter. However, if someone transcribed your pattern in to their own words and is selling it, there’s not much you can do,. apparently.  It’s not worth getting up in arms about though, not for me, anyway. (Although, to be fair, it hasn’t happened to me yet that I know of.) In my opinion, if someone is so creatively challenged that they can’t come up with their own ideas, and they don’t mind to beg borrow and steal, I can’t possibly change their mind by complaining. I can only keep putting out my best and most creative work, marketing to the best of my ability and offering unique ideas that are difficult to copy.

Making the choice to either keep your patterns to yourself, or share them is a personal one. But if the choice is made to share, why not share with the full knowledge, and preferably consent, that people are going to use a good idea to their own benefit? If someone make a few bucks or a few thousand from a great idea, and the genius who thought it up happens not to make anything from it, well, then, it was probably poor marketing that kept them from doing the same! Why be jealous of someone who accomplishes more/sells more/makes more money?? Look at them and see what can be learned from them!

get the twinge of jealousy, but I also know that getting my panties in a bunch over something I have absolutely ZERO control over is a waste of time and only stresses ME out. I’m not sure why someone else should be bothered by something that is perfectly within their rights that just doesn’t seem fair, as in the case of using a pattern to make items to sell.

I acknowledge that this is a completely different beast than artwork or written stories, which have much stricter copyright protections.

The above TED talk really helped to definitively make up my mind about how I feel about copyright and ethics. I consider myself an ethical person, for reals. But when it comes to crochet I just don’t think it is wrong at all to bounce off each other in a way that projects us all forward, pushes us to create more, more quickly, and more creatively. It’s an excellent way to think about business and there is absolutely no time to stagnate. If I’m not thinking ahead to the next great thing, I can be sure that someone else definitely is.

What is your opinion on copyright law and crochet? Do you agree with me? Please keep the discussion respectful🙂

This information is a very thorough look at copyright law as it relates to pattern writers/users and was very helpful when I was trying to figure out what copyright law meant for my business.

Also, please do not misconstrue anything I have written as actual legal advice.

All Juiced Up

juicewords

We bought a juicer about a week ago (a reasonably priced one from Wal-Mart, not a major investment), and I have been obsessed with it since we got it, making juice 2-3 times a day. It tastes good, but the way it makes my stomach feel is what keeps me doing it over and over again. When I feel the juice hit my stomach it instantly feels better. It’s like I had a stomach ache that I didn’t even know about, but then I drink the juice and it feels better. (That’s probably weird, but that’s just how it feels!) I’m not doing a juice fast or cleanse, just adding it into my day when I can. I feel like the more gently and subtly I can add in healthy choices, the more likely I am to stick with them over time. I didn’t really even want a juicer to be “healthy”, just to be able to have some fresh juice! But I can certainly see the benefits of consuming about a million times more nutrients than I was before.

I’m not doing the scary GREEN juice yet (well there were a couple…), but I have tried adding several different veggies to my fruit juice. So far, I have only made a couple of varieties that I really didn’t like, but my husband liked those so I’m going to include all the different recipes we’ve made this week. I’ve come to find that I really, REALLY don’t like cucumber, which is too bad because they’re cheap and they make a lot of juice! I’ve also come to find that I can add a carrot to almost any variety without a negative taste factor. Sometimes I even miss it if it’s not there!

You should also know that I did not feel one way or another about juice this time last week. “Juicing” was not even on my radar as something that I would adopt into my daily habits. I thought it would be a fun way to get a few more veggies and fruits into my body, and it definitely is. But it makes me feel good too, which I did not expect at all!

So here they are, 9 recipes for a first-time juicer:

The Cherry Limeade (My VERY FAVORITE!)

2 limes , 2 apples , + a couple handfuls of cherries

cherry  The Rise and Shine

1 grapefruit , 1 lime , 1 orange , 1 carrot , 1 apple , a few strawberries

grapefruitThe Gross Green One

½ a cucumber , handful spinach , ½ pineapple (peeled) , 1 banana

pineapple

The Cuckoo Cuke-oo

 ½ cucumber , 1 orange , 5-ish strawberries

cucumber

The Tolerable Liquid

½ cucumber , 1 lemon (peeled) , 7-10 strawberries , 2 apples

lemon2

The Strawberry Lemonade

1 lemon (peeled) , 1 apple , 5-ish strawberries , ½ a carrot

sberry2

The Almost-Smoothie

1 grapefruit , ½ a carrot , a few strawberries , 1 nectarine , 1 banana

carrot

The Grape Fusion

1 cup red grapes , 1 apple , about ¼ cup green grapes

 grapes

The Liquid Lettuce (It really tastes pretty good!)

1 apple , 2 oranges , 1 lemon , 1 carrot , 2 handfuls romaine lettuce

lettuce

The Big Orange

1 grapefruit , 2 oranges , 1 carrot , 1 nectarine , 1 apricot

orange

All the juices are much tastier served with lots of ice and a straw.

Do you make your own juice? What’s your favorite combination?
